COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Vice Chancellor and Dean of Engineering Dr. G. Kemble Bennett has appointed Dr. Bill Batchelor inaugural holder of the endowed Arthur McFarland Professorship in Engineering.

Batchelor, professor in the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering, began his career at Texas A&M as an assistant professor in the civil engineering department in 1976. He was promoted to associate professor in 1981, was named the Halliburton Professor in 1986 and promoted to full professor in the same year.

Batchelor's research is directed towards understanding, developing and improving existing treatment systems for water, wastewater, hazardous wastes, and contaminated soils and sludges. His research has covered a variety of physical, chemical and biological treatment methods and he has integrated these studies into his teaching and consulting. He is also involved in developing improved treatment technologies for desalination and industrial cooling water systems.

Batchelor received the Select Young Research Fellowship from the Texas Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) in 1985 and was director of the TEES Institute for Environmental Engineering from 1992 to 1998.

Batchelor received a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and a master's degree in environmental engineering from Rice University, and a Ph.D. in sanitary engineering from Cornell University. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas and is active in several professional organizations, including the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Association of Environmental Engineering Professors, and the International Association on Water Quality.

Margo Wilson London and Sandra Hay Wilson established the faculty endowment in 2005 in memory of their grandfather Arthur McFarland, class of 1905. McFarland, a mechanical engineering graduate, was a foremost dredging authority for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The professorship supports teaching, research, service and professional development activities, and recognizes outstanding faculty members for their service and contributions to Texas A&M Engineering.
